house

Here's a little set-up I created over the last few weeks, kind of an extension of the dioramas I've been doing.
I purchased a quarter scale dollhouse kit on eBay - "quarter scale" means a foot in real life is represented as a quarter inch in the dollhouse world (the house is about 6 or 7 inches tall). I modified it to my specs, bought some cheap plastic furniture in the same scale, then created little residents.
After making the Big! Toy! I wanted to make some very small figures, so I could easily arrange them in domestic situations and photograph them. Of course, photographing a very tiny figure in a very tiny room is nearly as difficult in its own way as photographing a 4.5-foot-tall floppy figure. I'm looking forward to making new figures (and houses?) for this project.
I've also been knitting sweaters. I kind of can't stop.

love the house. it's the best
i am a big fan of dollhouses
Jess, you are prolific! I'm amazed by how tiny this is - there's no way to know its true size out of context. My favorite thing about this series (one might loosely call it that, yes?) is your color palette and the way you keep it so limited. That along with your characters makes the whole feel so distinctive.
sweaters? in the summer? only in San Francisco... har har!
Hi, My 12 yo son and I really enjoy all the experimental work/play you do.
What are the little people made from? The flat pastel colours work well. photo with the orange glowing thru the windows in the background looks fantastic!
Your knit friends want to see the sweaters!
that little house is really cute.
How are the little dudes made? (I mean, what of? Fimo?)
They remind me a bit of Moomins, but not exactly. Very cute, but all your stuff is very cute.
Neat! I like that, I also love how simple the colour scheme is. Almost tone-on-tone, to match the residents!
so much fun!
just saw the post on big toy! love him, i wish i could meet him in person. hey, are you planning on re-publishing your book on little knitted creature people. i have baby boys and missed out on getting my own copy. so sad.
I also love dioramas and LOVE this doll house. What is it doing right now, I mean do you have this in your living room, lookin' all cool?
It's so unique, so great.
