pinkee

My sister Kate's birthday was on Wednesday, and I promised her a toy, and here it is. She named it Lucia, which is a nice name. Inspired by the taffy shop I posted a few weeks back, I made her in pink and white (the pink is Berkshire by Valley Yarns, which is 85% wool and 15% alpaca, in Rose; the white is Lamb's Pride Worsted in White Frost). I'm kind of enamored with the idea of combining knitting with crochet, so I crocheted a little flower and stuck it on her head - the pattern for the flower is modified from one in the formidable Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework, one of my most consulted books on the needle arts.
The toy itself is from my free bunny pattern - I just changed the colors, left off the ears, added the flower, and didn't do increases on the arms and legs (to make them more tube-like, less teardrop-shaped). I also embroidered on the eyes, which is becoming my preferred eye-depiction method. Plastic eyes are fine but I'm trying to get more expressiveness - I wanted this toy to radiate serenity. And pinkness.
More pics of the toy on flickr, just click on the photo to get to my photostream.
By the way, Berkshire is a great yarn for toy-making - it's very similar to LPW in its construction and its fuzziness, it even comes in a equally vibrant range of colors, but the alpaca content makes it slightly softer. Plus it's crazy cheap. And there's a sky blue (color 24)!

Very cute! I bet she'll be loved on for a long time.
Aaak very cute. I've been knitting your knitty kitty pattern (try saying that fast!) over the weekend. Jess - EXCELLENT pattern writing and smart thinking. Love it. Love the increasing and decreasing. I knitted it on 2 circ's though 'cause I have DPN's. Haven't quite finished her, will post when I do :)
so sweet! love the little crocheted hat :)
Jess... I too love the Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework! I hi-jacked my Mum's copy a few years ago and taught myself how to crochet and knit from it! (Don't worry, I found another copy at a thrift store and gave Mum's back). The next project - quilting - I think, and there's only one book I need to pull off my shelf!
I highly recommend the RD Guide to Needlework to anyone!
I think I may start wearing a giant crocheted flower on my head, daily. It looks awesome!
Very sweet! I love the little hat.
She is precious! I wish I could knit cute little animals as good as you:-> I need to take a class!
Oh - she does radiate serenity! And pinkness, too! I know that if it had not been for your sister's birthday, Lucia would be difficult to part with.
and I love the crocheted flower - a nice new touch....
very cute! i've yet to knit something from your book. i'll probably do so soon since i'm in my knitting mode again.
Awwwwww!
Thanks Jess!! I love her very much. She couldn't be sweeter.
really sweet... and i definitely think you've captured the expressive qualities you were hoping for!
Very cute! I like the quilt too. Did you make it? I found a sheet with those little girls on it at the thrift store just last week.
Very sweet! I love it!
